Found a free box of books on Maple Street and it was a total circus

I saw a post here about free books and grabbed a box from a porch on Maple Street, but when I got home I found a live hamster in the bottom of the box! I put him in a shoebox with some lettuce and posted my own 'free hamster' alert. Has anyone else ever found a surprise pet in a freebie haul?

My friend once got a free aquarium and found a tiny turtle still in it. That hamster probably thought it hit the jackpot with your lettuce.

Disagree with that take, @the_lee. A hamster finding a huge head of lettuce isn't a jackpot. It's a problem. That's way too much food at once. It would rot in their cage and make a huge mess. The tiny turtle story is funny, but the hamster situation is just bad pet care. People need to think before they give animals random human food.
