My bathroom faucet sprayed water everywhere like a sprinkler last night

Was just trying to brush my teeth around 11pm and the handle snapped clean off in my hand lol. Water shot straight up and hit the ceiling before I even knew what happened. Took me 20 minutes to find the shutoff valve under the sink because it was buried behind old caulk tubes. Had to sleep with a bucket under the sink and towels all over the floor. Gonna hit up Home Depot today to replace the whole thing. Anybody had a faucet handle just give up on them like that?

Hot take: That $400 leaf gutter guard I installed last May was a total waste

I put in these mesh gutter guards on my house in Decatur back in May thinking it'd save me from climbing a ladder every fall. By last week the gutters were still clogged with pine needles and those little seed pods from my neighbor's oak tree. The mesh holes got so gunked up that water was just running right over the top and pooling around my foundation. I spent Sunday afternoon ripping them all off and cleaning out the mess underneath. The guards themselves cost me $400 plus a full day of installation time. Now I'm back to just using a leaf blower from the roof edge twice a year. Has anyone else tried those foam inserts instead or should I just stick with regular cleaning?

Hot steel flew off my anvil and landed in my boot

I was out in the shed last Tuesday trying to draw out a 1 inch round bar for a pry bar. Got it cherry red and set it on the anvil, gave it a good whack with a 4 pound hammer, and the damn thing shot sideways like a rocket. It landed right inside my steel toed boot, stuck to my sock, and started smoking. I dropped everything and started hopping around cussing, threw the boot off, and dumped a water bottle on my foot. Blister the size of a quarter on my ankle now, but at least I didn't have to explain a third degree burn at urgent care. Next time I'm clamping that stock down or using a fuller, because that hurt way more than it needed to. Anyone else had a piece of hot metal go somewhere it definitely shouldn't?

Unpopular opinion: You don't HAVE to weigh everything for sauerkraut

I was at my kitchen counter last month making a 5 pound batch of red cabbage kraut. The recipe said to weigh every single gram of salt and cabbage for the perfect brine ratio. I forgot my scale was broken so I just eyeballed it with a tablespoon and packed it tight. Three weeks later it came out perfectly tangy and crunchy. Sure my ratios were off but it still worked. Has anyone else found that the strict ratios are overrated?

I keep seeing folks toss perfectly good hydrangea stems way too early

It drives me nuts when I walk through a shop and see someone chucking hydrangeas that are just starting to show a little droop. I've been running my little flower stand over on Oak Street for about 8 years now, and I swear if you give those stems a fresh cut under warm water and stick them in a bucket for 2 hours, they perk right back up like nothing happened. Last Wednesday I saw a gal throw out a whole bucket of 'em that had been sitting dry for maybe 30 minutes, and I couldn't help but say something. She looked at me like I had three heads, but I've literally saved hundreds of stems this way during summer markets. The trick is to cut at a sharp angle and let them drink deep, not just a quick dip. Has anyone else noticed people giving up on hydrangeas too soon or am I the only one?

Visited an old arboretum in Ohio and it changed how I prune

I stopped by the Holden Arboretum near Cleveland last month just to kill a Sunday. Saw a guy working on a mature oak, and he was leaving way more lower branches than I ever would have. He told me trees in open settings need that extra taper for wind resistance and long term stability. Now I'm second guessing every crown raise I've done on residential oaks. Anybody else rethink their cuts after seeing pro work on big specimens?

I bought a set of Spanish on Cassette from a thrift store back in 2019 for 4 bucks. The problem was I needed to talk to my neighbor Mrs. Garcia in San Antonio about her sprinkler timer, and I only knew about 10 words. I just popped one tape in my truck stereo every morning on my way to jobsites and repeated the phrases out loud. After about 3 weeks I could hold a basic conversation about timers and water pressure. Got a weird reading from a voltage meter on a new panel install

I was putting in a Vista panel at a house in Tempe last week, and my meter showed 14 volts on a zone that should have been closed. I checked the wiring twice, even swapped the meter, same thing. Turns out a tiny piece of wire insulation was stuck in the terminal block, making a partial connection. It took me an hour to find it.
