PSA: Patching a hole in drywall with toothpaste isn't a long term fix

I tried using toothpaste to fill a small nail hole last month and it looked great for about 3 days... then it crumbled out and left a bigger mess. Has anyone found a real quick fix that actually holds up without making a trip to the hardware store?

Did your toothpaste just crumble into dust later? My friend Jenny used spackle from a little tub she found in her dad's garage. She smeared it on a hole with her finger, let it dry for an hour, then sanded it smooth with a nail file. It stayed put for like 6 months until she moved out.

Used to think toothpaste was the only way to go for quick fixes... but that spackle trick sounds way more solid. Might have to rethink my whole approach to patching holes now.
