Rant: I almost bought a house with a hidden foundation problem in Springfield

I was ready to put in an offer on a cute 1950s ranch last month, but my dad insisted I pay for a separate structural engineer. The general inspector missed it, but the engineer found a 3-inch crack in the basement wall that would cost at least $15,000 to fix. Has anyone else had a general inspection miss something major that a specialist caught?

Honestly, that sounds like overkill for most houses. A general inspector should catch any real issues, and a three inch crack in an old basement wall is pretty normal settling. You probably just wasted money on an engineer for a problem that wasn't even that bad.

Yeah but what if the inspector misses something big? @the_riley might be right for most cases, but that peace of mind from an engineer is worth it for me... especially with a crack that size.
