Just read that most home ferments don't actually need an airlock

I was looking through a university extension website on food safety last night and it stated that for many vegetable ferments, a simple loosely sealed jar is just as effective as a specialized airlock system. This really surprised me after years of hearing you absolutely need that gear. Has anyone else had good results without the fancy equipment?

Yeah I see that a lot, like how @abby698's friend just burps the jars. Feels like half the stuff we buy is just solving a problem that wasn't really there.
