inVent: I used to set up my own outrigger pads on every job, now the younger guys just trust the ground without checking
Wait, a sinkhole? Like the ground just opened up under a crane? That's insane. I wouldn't trust that crew's judgment for a second if they're pushing back on probing after something like that. You'd think a near miss like that would make everyone a believer, not get you attitude.

inMy hand-cut dovetail marathon on a small chest
The same thing happens with anything you do repeatedly - your brain thinks it knows the steps so it wants to skip ahead. It's like when I'm sorting mail and start grabbing bundles by feel instead of checking addresses. That always ends with me backtracking. Sometimes you have to remind yourself that the boring slow part is actually the part that keeps you from having to redo everything later.

inFound a cheap hostel in Tokyo that had FREE breakfast and dinner included
I'd probably burn water if I tried making that myself, so $18 sounds like a steal.

inUpdate: I completely changed my mind about buying a fixer-upper after seeing my friend's house
Started shopping for a fixer upper after a friend did the same thing (she turned a total dump into the coziest house I've ever seen). I set aside $15k for surprises and honestly only needed about $8k of it for the big stuff like plumbing and electrical.

inA client's oak table taught me to trust my gut on wood movement
Heard this from a buddy who does custom cabinetry. He ignored a hairline crack once (thought it was nothing) and the whole face split right down the middle during final sanding. That waiting room trick is now like his religion or something.
