Grabbed the wrong drill bit 4 times before I noticed

I spent like 45 minutes trying to get a pilot hole started in a piece of oak for a shelf bracket and kept wondering why the bit kept slipping. Turns out I had grabbed a 1/4 inch bit when I needed a 3/16, and my glasses were on the other side of the garage the whole time. Has anyone else spent way too long on a simple screw-up like that?

Respectfully, I see it a little differently. In my experience, those frustrating moments are usually a sign I need to slow down and check my setup before starting. I've definitely grabbed the wrong bit before, but after the first or second time the hole felt off, I would have stopped to look at what I was doing instead of just pushing through. Sometimes the real mistake isn't just grabbing the wrong tool, it's ignoring the signs that something's not right.

So what do you do when the signs are subtle enough to miss?
