Tried that 'pre-fill your screw holes' trick and it backfired hard

I watched a video from a guy in Ohio who swears by pre-filling every screw hole with a tiny dab of mud before you sink the screw. Figured I'd try it on a big ceiling job last Thursday. Spent an extra 2 hours doing that step, then when I went to finish the next day, half the screws had popped anyway because the mud dried and pushed them out. What a waste of time. Has anyone else had this trick fail or did I just do it wrong?

Oh MAN that is SO frustrating, I feel your pain. I tried that exact trick once and it was an absolute disaster, never doing that again.

Tried doing it in smaller batches instead and it saved me so much stress. I just split everything up into like three separate sessions and it went way smoother. Might be worth giving that a shot if you ever feel brave enough to try again.
