Huh, I actually kinda disagree with you there. I've got a cheapo $15 stud finder from Home Depot and it's been dead on every time I've used it, even on my old plaster walls with lath. Maybe yours just needed fresh batteries or you weren't holding it flat against the wall? I've seen people try to use them sideways or at an angle and then blame the tool. Not saying yours isn't junk, but I think sometimes it's user error more than the tool itself.

dead on every time" is basically my experience too. I picked up one of those cheapo magnetic ones and honestly it's never let me down, even on some real janky old walls in my place.
