My bathroom vanity took 3 years to show water damage after a leaky pipe...

I finally tore out the old vanity this weekend and the MDF was completely swollen and crumbling behind the drawer, even though the leak dried up years ago. Has anyone switched to solid wood vanities after dealing with particle board rot?

Stick with plywood or solid wood next time, MDF is just compressed cardboard waiting to rot.

Yeah, "compressed cardboard waiting to rot" is the perfect way to put it. That stuff is basically wood dust held together with glue and hopes. I switched to a solid birch vanity after my last particle board disaster and it's been night and day. The best part is that even if you get a little moisture on solid wood, it just dries out and maybe swells a tiny bit, but it won't turn into that crumbly mess. Plus, you can actually sand and repaint solid wood if you ever want to change the color, which is huge. Once MDF gets wet like that, it's just done for good.
