I think everyone's wrong about skipping a primer coat before painting drywall

I've seen so many folks in my crew and online just slap paint on new drywall to save time, but after fixing a dozen patchy jobs last year, I'm convinced a good PVA primer is non-negotiable. Has anyone else had a paint job fail because they skipped this step?

My old boss used to say skipping primer is like building on sand. The finish just won't stick right. @christopher903 is spot on about it being a fake shortcut. I read a whole article where they tested it, and the unprimed wall needed two extra coats to look even close. That's more work, not less. It's one of those things you only skip if you enjoy doing the job twice.

Wasn't there a whole thing on a contractor forum about this? They called it "painter's regret" or something. The drywall just drinks the paint unevenly without a primer seal, so you end up using more paint for a worse finish. It seems like a shortcut, but it always costs more time and money to fix later. I'm with you, skipping it is a bad move.
