Pulled up carpet in my 1970s house last Thursday and found beautiful hardwood underneath

I've been in this place for about 4 years and always figured the carpet was original. Got brave with a pry bar and pulled up a corner in the living room. Sure enough, there's solid oak floors under there. They're a bit rough with some old stain marks and a few gaps, but nothing a good sanding can't fix. My wife wants to hire someone to refinish them, but I'm thinking I can rent a drum sander from Home Depot and do it myself over a long weekend. Anyone here ever tackled a floor refinish on their own? How bad was the dust?

My buddy Mike tried the DIY drum sander route on his 1950s bungalow a couple years back. He said the dust cloud was so thick he couldn't see the far wall of his living room after ten minutes, and his wife made him sleep in the garage for a week. He ended up paying a pro anyway to fix the gouges he dug in the wood because he stopped to answer his phone. I'm not saying don't try it, but maybe start in a closet first.
