The contractor's quote made me dig my own 40 foot trench
Last month a local guy in Columbus quoted me $1,800 to replace a cracked drain pipe under my driveway. I read somewhere that a homeowner with a shovel can do the same job for about $120 in parts and a weekend. So I rented a mini excavator for $85 a day and spent two days digging, patching the blacktop after with cold mix. Has anyone else tackled a driveway drain job solo and found the prep work was the real headache?

And once you factor in the time spent fixing your own mistakes, like hitting a gas line or realizing the pipe is deeper than you thought, that $1,800 starts looking pretty reasonable. The prep work is what kills you, but honestly, the feeling of pulling it off for under $200 is worth the back pain.
