Switched from cold pour patching to heat-lancing cracks after my November mishap

I used to just shovel in cold patch and stomp it flat, but after a 40 degree day in Spokane left my repair crumbling by January, I started using a propane torch to dry and heat the crack edges first, and the bond finally holds even through frost heaves, so has anyone else tried warming the surface before patching in cold weather?
