Neighbor told me I was priming wrong on my asphalt patch

Last spring I patched this big crack in my driveway near Akron and it flaked off in like 3 months. My neighbor Steve came over and said I was skipping the tack coat step before pouring the patch mix. He showed me how to brush on that liquid primer first and let it get tacky for 20 minutes before adding the cold patch. I did his method on a new pothole last month and it's still holding up solid. Has anyone else had luck with that extra step or is it just overkill for small fixes?

Your neighbor Steve is 100% RIGHT about the tack coat step. I tried skipping it on a crack in my driveway two summers ago and it started peeling up by October. The primer creates a bond that the cold patch just can't make on its own on dry, dusty asphalt. Did you rough up the edges of that pothole with a wire brush before you put the tack coat on, or just go straight to brushing the primer on? I find that makes a HUGE difference in how well the whole thing sticks together.
