I quit filling every crack before sealing, after a guy in Dayton said I was wasting $50 a bucket
He pointed out that sand and dirt packed into hairline cracks just lets the sealer sit on top and peel within one winter, so now I blow them out with a leaf blower, seal only the wide ones, and topcoat the whole slab, and that drive has held up 3 seasons in Ohio freeze thaw, does anyone else skip the tiny cracks or am I the only one doing way less work now?
Watched my neighbor do the opposite last fall and waste a whole weekend on his hands and knees with a wire brush and a shop vac getting every little hairline crack spotless. Come spring most of that work had peeled right off anyway because water still got in from the sides and froze. He was out there for two days and a hundred bucks in sealer and it looked worse than before by June. That was the moment I stopped feeling bad about my lazy way of doing it. Blowing the junk out and only chasing the wide stuff is just smarter, the hairline ones are not worth the time or the money. Three seasons in Ohio says way more than any guy with a brush ever could.
