Tried cleaning my throttle body with a toothbrush and it actually worked

I was getting a rough idle on my old Civic and didn't want to buy the special spray cleaner. I used an old toothbrush and some rubbing alcohol I had, scrubbing the plate for about 10 minutes. The idle smoothed right out, so I guess you don't always need the fancy branded stuff. Has anyone else had luck with cheap substitutes for engine cleaning?

Wait, you used rubbing alcohol on engine parts? That stuff can dry out rubber seals and cause leaks down the road. I'd keep an eye on those hoses for any cracks.

Wow, I always thought you HAD to buy that special spray! My uncle used to swear by it. Seeing this makes me want to try the toothbrush trick on my own car next weekend, saves a trip to the store for sure.
