That guy at the bike co-op told me I was cleaning my chain totally backwards
I used to spray degreaser all over my chain and then rinse it off, but someone pointed out I was just pushing dirt into the rollers. Now I wipe each link with a rag after adding lube, and my shifting actually stays crisp for more than one ride. Has anyone else tried the wipe-only method and seen a difference?

Started doing the exact same thing a few years back and it made a huge difference. I used to drown my chain in degreaser too and wondered why it felt gritty after a week. Now I just wipe the chain down with a dry rag after every ride, add a drop of lube on each roller, then wipe off the excess. It takes like two minutes and my drivetrain stays clean for way longer. I also noticed my cassette and chainrings don't get that black grime buildup anymore. The whole "less is more" approach really works once you try it.

Come on, man, you're just swapping one problem for another. Wiping a dry rag over a dirty chain just grinds that existing grit deeper into the rollers and pins, especially if you've got any leftover degreaser residue. A drop of lube on each roller ends up pooling in the jockey wheels or just gets flung off immediately, so you're wasting half the bottle. The "less is more" crowd always forgets that a deep clean with degreaser every few hundred miles actually prevents that black paste from forming in the first place. Your cassette might look cleaner because you're basically just smearing around the grime instead of removing it, (if you know what I mean). I'd rather spend ten minutes every other week doing a proper strip than two minutes every day pretending my chain is getting any real lubrication.
