Talked to a guy in Medellin about his 'home base' setup

I met him at a cafe last Tuesday and he said he keeps a cheap apartment in Lisbon year-round, even when he's gone for months. He called it his 'anchor point' for mail and a stable internet address. It costs him about 400 euros a month, which seemed high to me at first. But he argued it saves more on visa runs and stress than it costs. Has anyone else tried keeping a permanent spot like that while moving around?

That 400 euro Lisbon anchor point is basically a very expensive mailbox. The_joel is right about paying for peace of mind, but my version is a $5 a month virtual mailbox in South Dakota. It lets me vote and keeps my car registered without funding a whole empty apartment. Some people just like having a physical key to a place, even if it's just for their router to sit alone.

It's a classic case of paying for peace of mind, which people do in all sorts of ways. You see it with folks who keep a storage unit forever or pay extra for a nonstop flight. That small fixed cost just removes a whole layer of hassle from your life.
