After my friend's garage got broken into in Austin, I finally set up a separate guest network for all smart home gadgets.

The thieves got in by exploiting a known vulnerability in a cheap smart lock, which gave them access to the whole home network and all the devices on it, so now I always isolate IoT stuff on its own VLAN.

Oh man, that's a scary story. I was just reading an article about how those cheap wifi cameras are a huge risk, they get hacked all the time and then attackers can jump to other devices. Isolating everything on a guest network is basically the only way to sleep at night now. It's crazy we even have to think about our lightbulbs being a security hole.

That's the smart move. I'd take it a step further and put things like smart TVs and media players on their own separate network too. Those things are always phoning home with data. My neighbor had his TV get caught up in a botnet, just from a bad app. It's not just about locks, it's about any gadget that can connect to the internet.
