Hot take: I used to hate borrowing tools from our library, but a broken drill changed my mind

The real trick is that older tools often used standard parts that you could fix yourself. That hammer drill probably has brushes you can buy at any hardware store for three bucks. Try finding replacement parts for a brand new cordless trimmer five years from now - you'll be tossing the whole thing.

Am I the only one who followed a 'shortcut' that added two hours to my hike?

At least you got a funny story from it" is exactly right. A few years back I took one of those fake markers on a trail in the Catskills and ended up slipping into a creek, but my family still laughs about it every time we go hiking.

Hit 200 yards of concrete in one day and my knees are screaming

That "power trowel dying on you at the end" part is rough, but I think the real issue nobody mentions is the hydration and electrolyte balance. When you're pushing that hard for that long, your muscles lock up way faster, and no amount of knee pads will save you if your body is running on empty.

Old timer in Portland told me to stop watering my oak trees in summer

Right, because trees are just like houseplants that need a sip of water every time you walk past. Nothing says "trust the locals" like seeing your oaks throw a little party when you neglect them.

I always thought the Horsehead Nebula was just a dark cloud

That new Webb image really shows the structure, doesn't it? It's wild that something so big is basically getting sculpted by starlight. I read that the Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula work the same way, with those young stars blowing material away. Makes you wonder how many other dark patches in old photos are actually these dense, active columns.
