Pro tip: stop using the 'chosen one' prompt for fantasy stories

I was at a writing group in Portland last week and heard three people pitch the same farm kid with a secret destiny idea. It made me think, why do we keep going back to that well? The real story is in the side character who has to clean up the mess after the big prophecy fails. What's a tired prompt you wish people would drop?

Can we retire the secret heir to the throne too?

Nah, hugowells, that trope still has some life in it. It's a classic setup for a good underdog story. You just need a fresh twist to make it feel new again.
