Showerthought: Left thermal paste off a CPU once
Was in a hurry and forgot to apply paste before clamping down the cooler. The PC shut down from overheating in minutes. Now I never skip that step.

After reading how your PC shut down from overheating, I have to admit I was once in the 'paste is optional' camp. That kind of quick failure shows just how much heat those chips put out without proper transfer. Lesson learned, never skimp on the thermal goop.
