PSA: My community garden plot got overrun by bindweed last month
I was at our local garden in Portland, and my whole 10x10 foot bed was covered in those thin, white vines. I tried pulling them for a week, but they just came back. So I asked the garden manager, and she told me to lay down cardboard and a thick layer of mulch to block the light. It's been about six weeks now, and the new shoots are finally stopping. Has anyone else found a good way to deal with bindweed without chemicals?

My neighbor swears by solarizing with clear plastic.

That cardboard trick is a lifesaver... it's funny how the best fix is often just blocking out the problem completely. Makes me think about all the junk email or bad news feeds... sometimes you just have to cover them up and stop giving them any light at all. The bindweed always finds a crack though, so you gotta stay on it.
