Vent: I thought cold brew was just iced coffee for people trying too hard

My buddy in Chicago kept telling me to try making it at home, saying it was way smoother. I finally gave in last month and used a cheap mason jar with 1 cup of coarse grounds and 4 cups of water. Let it sit for 18 hours like he said, and honestly, it's a total game changer. No bitterness at all, even without any sugar. It's so much easier to drink black. Anyone else have a coffee thing they were totally wrong about at first?

Yeah, cold brew is actually a different process, not just a style. Iced coffee is usually hot brewed coffee that gets poured over ice, so it can still have that bitter, acidic taste. Cold brew never touches heat, it just steeps in cold water for a long time. That's why it ends up so much smoother and less harsh on your stomach.

A barista in Portland told me cold brew needs at least 12 hours to steep right.
