TIL my neighbor's 80 year old dad only drinks instant coffee

I was complaining about my pour-over setup and he said 'son, I've been drinking Folgers since 1965 and I'm still here.' Made me wonder if we are overthinking the whole thing, or is there actually a difference once you hit a certain age lol.

The taste difference between fresh ground and instant is real, but palates change with age. My dad lost most of his sense of smell around 70, which is directly linked to taste. He went from being a coffee snob to not caring at all because he honestly couldn't tell the difference anymore. The Folgers generation might just be enjoying their coffee the only way they can still really taste it.

You know what nobody talks about with this? There's a weird social pressure thing going on too. @drew_thomas9 your dad's situation is a perfect example of how taste literally changes, but there's also this unspoken rule that you're supposed to pretend to enjoy fancy coffee once you hit a certain age or income bracket. Some of these Folgers drinkers probably remember the days when coffee was just a hot brown liquid you drank while smoking a cigarette and arguing about lawn care. They never wanted the whole single-origin Ethiopian pour-over thing, they just got pushed into it by culture and now they're quietly rebelling by going back to what they actually like. That generational shift might be less about losing taste and more about being tired of pretending.
