Shoutout to the old timer who taught me how to read a worn micrometer at 6am

He grabbed my hand and showed me how to feel the thousandths instead of looking at the scratched barrel, all while his coffee got cold. Has anyone else had a veteran machinist show you a trick that wasn't in any manual?

The real trick is he probably saved you from scrapping a part worth more than his paycheck that day. Did he ever show you the spit trick for checking surface finish?

@nancy929 my old man always said spit was cheaper than coolant... worked half the time too.
