Solar panels on my shed seemed like a gimmick until the math worked out

I figured those little ground mount kits were just for rich people who wanted to feel green, but last August I actually added up my shed's power use for my greenhouse fans and lights and it came to about $35 a month. After pricing out a 400 watt system from a local shop in Portland it paid for itself in 14 months with the tax credit and now I'm not even on the grid for that circuit. Has anyone else had a project they thought was hype that ended up being a total no brainer?
