Showerthought: my neighbor said his AC bill went up $50 this month
He was complaining about the heat, but it made me realize how much extra energy we're all using. Has anyone found a good way to keep their place cool without blasting the AC all day?

My old apartment in Phoenix taught me the opposite. We used blackout curtains on every window and ran a small fan pointed at a bowl of ice. The AC barely kicked on after noon. It felt like we were fighting the sun itself, but our bill was always lower than our neighbors who just set the thermostat and forgot it.

Seriously? That sounds like a full time job just to stay cool. Most people don't have the time to mess with bowls of ice all day. A modern AC unit running right is way more efficient than trying to hack it with fans and curtains. You probably just had a better insulated apartment than your neighbors to begin with. Fighting the sun is a losing battle in Phoenix, you just gotta pay for the cool air.
