My heat pump shorted out during a heat wave in Austin
Last August the compressor just stopped mid-afternoon when it was 104 outside. I called three HVAC places and the first two quoted over $6,000 to replace the whole unit. The third guy found a blown capacitor for $180 and it fired right back up. Should I get a surge protector installed now to avoid this again, or is that just another upsell I should skip?

Sounds like your buddy got lucky. But surge protectors only stop power spikes, and it sounds like your capacitor just died from heat fatigue in 104 degree weather. That's a wear part, not a surge problem, so you might be tossing money at something that won't change anything.
