TIL my sharpening stones were way dirtier than I thought
I kept wondering why my knives weren't getting as sharp after honing. Finally soaked my stones in dish soap for 20 minutes and scrubbed them with a stiff brush the gunk that came off was gross. Anyone else forget to deep clean their stones regularly?

Oh come on, dish soap is way too harsh for stones, you probably just stripped all the good grit out of them. Water and a light scrub is all you need, keep it simple.

Hold up, are we seriously pretending dish soap is gonna ruin a stone? @the_zara I gotta disagree big time. A little bit of soap cuts through the oil and grime way better than water alone. Stones are tougher than people give them credit for, it's not like they're made of paper. Honestly, I've used dish soap on mine for years and never noticed any damage or lost 'grit' or whatever. Water alone just leaves a film, trust me.
