Read somewhere that most people cut carpet wrong too, not just stretch it. Something about the direction of the fibers.

My friend Jenna remodeled her whole living room last summer, and she told me she made that exact mistake. She bought this really nice gray carpet from Home Depot and cut it all out in the basement without checking the fiber direction first. When she laid it out upstairs, the nap was running opposite from the doorway to the main seating area. It looked terrible, like a totally different color in some spots. She tried to pull it and restretch it, but the damage was done. Ended up having to buy a whole new roll and start over.
