My buddy got stuck in a pretty boring office job for like three years while he waited for a spot to open up on the repair crew he wanted. He was really frustrated watching everyone else move around fast. That time he spent just learning the basics, though, meant he was totally ready when his chance came. Now he's got this rock solid foundation everyone else who rushed in is missing.

Actually, that's a good point about learning the basics. But maybe not everyone on the faster track missed that stuff. Some people could have done a proper apprenticeship or trade school first, where they learned the foundations in a different way. They might have gotten the hands-on practice and the theory at the same time. So your friend's path was perfect for him, but others might have built the same foundation on a quicker route.
