A guy at the trailhead told me my tent footprint was too small

He pointed out that my footprint was about two inches shy of the actual tent floor, letting water pool under the fly. I swapped it for a proper sized one from the same brand, and my floor stayed bone dry during a downpour in the Smokies last month. Has anyone else had a piece of gear that was almost right but caused a big problem?

I always thought a close-enough footprint was fine, but that exact fit really does make a difference.
