Vent: That pricey meal kit service was costing me more than takeout

I signed up for HelloFresh back in January thinking it would save me cash on groceries. But after three months I did the math and each meal was coming out to like $12 per person. That's actually more than what I'd spend on a simple Chinese takeout order from Golden Dragon down the street. Has anyone else noticed these meal kits aren't really a budgeting win once you break down the per serving cost?

I saw this comparison on a consumer report last week that said meal kits cost about 30 percent more than buying the same ingredients from a store. It kind of makes sense when you think about it, they have to pay for the packaging and the delivery and all that. For me it's easier to just grab some frozen veggies and rice and make my own version for like 3 bucks a serving.

Wait, does that 30 percent include the cost of me accidentally buying the wrong spice and then ordering takeout anyway? Last time I tried a meal kit I forgot to add the protein pouch and ended up eating a bowl of sad rice with a single sad carrot. So my homemade version costs about 10 bucks and a deep sense of shame.
