My apprentice in Phoenix said we should always use a 3/8 inch joint for residential brick, no matter what.
He argued it's stronger and looks better than the 1/2 inch I've used for twenty years. I tried it on a garage job yesterday and honestly, the wall felt more solid. Do you guys stick to a specific joint size or change it up?

Guess I've been building weak walls for two decades then. What other old habits should we question?

Hold on, let's not throw out old rules just because a new idea shows up. In my work, I've seen plenty of walls built the traditional way that have held up for fifty years through bad storms. The old method works if you use the right materials and do it right. Sometimes the new way is just a different path to the same strong result, not the only path.
