Shoutout to the $50 sourdough starter kit I never needed
So I got sucked into buying a fancy sourdough starter kit from some online shop for 50 bucks last month. It came with a cute glass jar, a linen cover, and a little wooden spoon. Two weeks later I realized my regular mason jar, a coffee filter, and a rubber band work exactly the same. The starter I grew from plain flour and water is just as active as the one from their special 'heritage' grains. I basically paid 50 bucks for a jar I could have grabbed at the thrift store for a dollar. Now I'm trying to convince my buddy not to fall for the same trap. Anyone else get tricked into buying unnecessary bread gear when you first started?
