Went to the library in Portland and saw a book club arguing about whether the main character was a hero or just selfish

I used to always see characters in black and white, like the hero in that old book Shane. But last year I read a story where the guy saved his town but also lied to his family the whole time. It made me realize sometimes the selfish choice and the right choice are the same messy action. Now I get why book clubs argue.

That Shane book was my dad's favorite, he'd talk about the clear good guy and bad guy like it was a math problem. Then you get these new stories where the hero is also the guy forgetting his kid's birthday because he's too busy doing the right thing somewhere else. It's enough to make you want to throw the book at the wall during those club meetings. I guess that's why they serve cheap wine, to smooth over the moral outrage.

Nah, that's just lazy writing.
