Vent: our book club's "safe space" rule backfired at the library last Tuesday
We have 14 people in our group and we voted in January to ban any "negative" takes on the monthly pick. Big mistake. Last Tuesday at the downtown branch, a member brought up that the author's pacing was off in the middle chapters, and the moderator shut them down with a rule quote. Three people left early, and the rest of us just sat there nodding, not actually talking about the book. Now we're stuck with a rule that kills every real debate, and the next meeting is in 5 days. Has anyone else had a civility policy turn their group into a fake-polite echo chamber, or do we need to vote it out?
