TIL at the library that reading aloud to myself fixes my comprehension slump

I was skimming through Dune at the downtown branch and couldn't remember a single thing from the last three pages, so I whispered the next paragraph out loud and suddenly the political scheming actually made sense, has anyone else tried this for dense books?

I started doing this years ago with David McCullough's 1776, which is dense even for a history buff. Reading the troop movements out loud at my kitchen table was the only way I could keep the logistics straight. I also find it works best if I whisper with a little more energy than normal speech, almost like I'm acting it out. Your mileage may vary, but for me it turns skimming into actual reading somehow.

Read somewhere that whispering activates your auditory memory in a totally different way than silent reading does.
