That $50 'official' discussion guide for our book club pick was a total trap

Our group chose a dense historical novel, and I sprung for the publisher's branded guide hoping it would spark better debate. It just gave us a bunch of leading questions that shut down actual conversation (like 'How does the protagonist's journey mirror the author's own life?'). Has your club ever bought a guide that actually helped, or do they always steer you wrong?

Totally feel your pain with those overpriced guides! My friend's club bought one for a mystery novel last year and it basically just listed the plot points in order. We ended up having a way better chat just arguing about which suspect we trusted the least from the start. Those official questions always seem designed for a classroom, not actual people trying to have fun. It's like they're scared of letting readers have their own messy opinions. Now we just bring one weird thought or question each, and it works way better.

Honestly @the_joel, those structured guides can help keep a chat from just going in circles.
