Our group argued for 45 minutes straight about the ending of 'Project Hail Mary'

I was sure the whole debate would be over in like 10 minutes, but half the club thought the ending was perfect and the other half thought it was a total cop-out. We spent most of the time just going in circles about whether Rocky's fate was sad or hopeful. Has anyone else had a simple book talk blow up into a full hour-long fight?

How is Rocky's fate even a debate? The ending was clearly sad because he's trapped forever away from his own kind. He saved humanity but lost his entire world, that's a tragedy not a happy ending. The book just glosses over how lonely that would actually be. Calling that hopeful feels like missing the whole point.

Wait, but he's not alone though? He's got the whole human race with him now. Honestly that sounds like a pretty good deal after being stuck on a ship for years.
