My book club debated whether Moby Dick was secretly about colon cancer for 45 minutes

We were at Linda's basement last Tuesday when Dave pulled out a printout of Melville's dental records and I realized this group needs a moderator before someone gets hurt, has anyone else's book club gone completely off the rails?

Oh man, Linda's basement sounds like the real hero here. We once spent an entire meeting arguing whether the wallpaper in The Yellow Wallpaper was actually floral or just had bad vibes. I'm pretty sure I've read the dentist records for every author we've covered by now.

My book club once spent the better part of an evening trying to prove that the three pigs in the fairy tale were secretly a metaphor for early 90s Britpop bands. I sat there nodding along with a bag of chips, wondering if I'd accidentally wandered into a cult meeting for people who took children's literature way too seriously. Dave bringing out dental records actually sounds kind of restrained compared to the time Janet tried to map the characters in Moby Dick onto a real estate development timeline. We ended up calling a truce after someone got a nosebleed from shouting about the symbolism of the whale's tail.
