I finally realized I was judging entire books by their first chapters

After 5 years in book clubs, it clicked when I forced myself to finish a slow starter called 'The Overstory' and ended up loving it, has anyone else discovered a book that completely changed after the first 50 pages?

And that's exactly how I felt about 'The Power of One', which started so slow but became one of my favorites.

The slow start is actually a brilliant trick because it makes the ending hit so much harder. Nobody ever talks about how that slow burn mirrors what the character goes through, you know? All that quiet setup turns into something so intense that you don't even realize it's happening until you're deep in it. Is that not the whole point of power building slowly, like the title says?
