Digital rereads just don't hit like a battered paperback

I used to think e-readers were the future, especially after I moved to Chicago and had to haul 40 books across two apartments. But last month I pulled my old copy of The Fellowship of the Ring off the shelf and the margins were full of notes from 2011, my coffee stains, a bus ticket from a trip to Milwaukee. That physical history made the story feel richer than the clean text on my Kindle ever did. Does anyone else keep their marked-up old copies just for the memories they carry?
