Bought the $40 hardcover for our book club pick and it's been worth every penny

Our group chose this really dense historical fiction novel last month, and I almost just got the ebook. But I saw the hardcover had maps and a family tree in the front... so I splurged. Having those physical pages to flip back to while we argued about who betrayed who in chapter seven was a total game changer. It saved our last meeting from being a complete mess of 'wait, which cousin is that again?'. I must have passed the book around the circle five times to settle debates. For a book with like thirty characters, that $40 felt like buying peace. Anyone else find that a specific edition of a book totally saved their club's discussion?

Oh man, I was totally the ebook-only person for years. Thought hardcovers were just for show. But my club read this mystery with a ton of clues and red herrings, and my cheap paperback had none of the illustrations. I spent the whole meeting confused while my friend with the special edition kept pointing to pictures in the book. I had to borrow it just to follow along. That one time changed my whole view. Now I always check what extras an edition has before we pick.

Yeah, I learned that the hard way with a fantasy map once. Now I just buy whatever version the person leading the discussion is using. Saves a lot of trouble.
