Warning: my 4 hour Sunday screen binge turned into a week of trash sleep and I know exactly which app did it
Last Sunday I told myself I would just check one thing on my phone while my coffee brewed. Four hours later I was still on the couch, coffee cold, and I had watched maybe 40 short videos I could not even remember. The rest of the week was a mess. I was up past 1 a.m. every night, my back hurt from the couch, and I snapped at a client's beagle on Tuesday which is not the dog's fault. I have a timer on two apps but not the one that actually eats my time because I kept telling myself I need it for work stuff. I finally moved that app to the last screen and turned off its alerts and the difference after 3 days is real. What apps have you actually blocked vs just set a timer on? Timers I ignore. The full block is the only thing that works for me.
My brother in law did the same thing with YouTube last fall. He deleted the app off his phone completely and just used the browser version if he really needed it. Said the extra step of typing the address killed about 90 percent of his random scrolling. I tried that with Instagram for two weeks and it worked until I saved the website to my home screen, which put me right back where I started. Now I just keep the app on the last page of a folder inside another folder, and it is enough of a pain to find that I mostly leave it alone.
