My grandfather told me to quench in old motor oil instead of water for tool steel.

After 4 years of fighting with cracked blades from water quenching, I tried his advice on an old farrier's rasp and it came out harder with zero cracks, and now I only use oil for anything over 0.5 percent carbon, has anyone else switched and noticed a big difference?

Quenching in oil still risks cracking on high carbon steel.

Oil can still crack high carbon steel depending on the specific alloy and temperature.
