A customer's comment about his old Schwinn made me see bottom brackets differently

He said, 'I just keep it greased and it never complains,' after I suggested a full overhaul. It hit different because I'm always looking for the 'right' fix, but his simple maintenance kept it rolling for 30 years. What's the oldest bike you've seen that just needed basic care, not a full rebuild?

Funny how a simple comment can shift your whole view... I was always the type to take everything apart at the first sign of trouble. That customer's line about just keeping it greased really stuck with me. It's like what amy_robinson said, we do overcomplicate things. My dad's old three-speed from the seventies is the same way, just needs the basics and it never quits. Makes you wonder how many problems we create by looking for the perfect fix instead of just doing the simple stuff.

Sometimes the best fix is just keeping things clean and moving... we overcomplicate simple machines. My neighbor's 80s mountain bike still runs fine with just chain lube and air in the tires. It's a good reminder that not every creak needs a complete tear-down.
