Rant: Saw a pitmaster in Fort Worth using way too much lighter fluid on his coals

I was at a cook-off in Fort Worth last month and watched a guy setting up his pit. He must have dumped half a bottle of lighter fluid onto a fresh pile of charcoal and lit it right away. The flames shot up about three feet and the smoke was thick and black for a good ten minutes. It gave the whole area a nasty chemical smell that you just don't want near your food. Has anyone else run into this and found a good way to politely suggest using a chimney starter instead?

My neighbor did that last summer and betty20 is right, it stinks up the whole block.
